Forum
What is Forum?
Forum is a basic communication tool for Moodle.

Forums have many uses, such as:

-
A social space for students to get to know each other
-
Discussing course content or reading materials
-
Continuing online an issue raised previously in a face-to-face session
-
Discussions between co-instructors, or instructors and TAs (using a hidden forum)
-
A help center where tutors and students can give advice
-
A one-on-one support area for private student-teacher communications (using a forum with separate groups and with one student per group)
-
Extension activities, for example ‘brain teasers’ for students to ponder and suggest solutions

Instructor View

Forum setup:
General
Forum type:

-
A single simple discussion: Only one topic, started by the instructor, is allowed. This is best suited for short-term, focused conversations.
-
Each person posts one discussion: Each student may start one new topic. Students are not limited in the number of replies they can post within those topics.
-
Q and A forum: An instructor posts one topic, E.g: posing a question to students. Students must post their response by replying to instructor's question post before they can view other students’ responses. Note: There is no way to make the poster’s name blind. Also students need to wait 30 minutes after their response published to see other's response.
-
Standard forum displayed in a blog-like format: Allow multiple topics listed with the most recent topic at the top of the page and replies behind a link. Students may start new topics in this format.
-
Standard forum for general use: is the most common/basic type of Forum, where anyone can start a new discussion at any time. Allow multiple topics arranged in a threaded conversation.
Subscription and tracking

Subscription mode:
we recommend you choose the Optional subscription.
If you choose Forced subscription, that means you will get notification of everything everyone post every time. I’m not sure that’s what you want.
Ratings

Aggregate type:
The Aggregate type defines how ratings are combined to form the final grade in the Gradebook.
-
No ratings - the activity will not appear in the Gradebook.
-
Average of ratings - The mean of all ratings
-
Count of ratings - The number of rated items becomes the final grade. Note that the total cannot exceed the maximum grade for the activity.
-
Maximum rating- The highest rating becomes the final grade
-
Minimum rating - The smallest rating becomes the final grade
-
Sum of ratings - All ratings are added together. Note that the total cannot exceed the maximum grade for the activity.
Activity completion

Teachers can limit the number of posts a student can make in a given time period to prevent individuals from dominating discussions.

Note: If the Forum type you choose is Q and A forum. You want to make sure that students reply to your post (question). Then you only need to check the last one:
Require replies: Student must post replies (1).

Then click on Save and display.
